And then the lights in the living room came on. “Enricooo? Enrico! What are you doing in the dark? Who are you talking to? And still in your swimming clothes?”

The girl faded away and the tree darkened back to the way it was, the leaves softening and curling into a stillness. Tita Henrietta was looking at Enrico and did not see.

“Tita,” he said, rubbing his eyes. “Let’s return this tree! There’s a girl who says it’s hers and she needs it back.”

Tita Henrietta laughed. “Did you get sunstroke or something? What girl? I told you to get dressed. Do you need Sergeant Suspecio to bathe you?”

Both she and Enrico gaped at the Sergeant, who had been standing there like a tree, listening while his aunt scolded him. Now he kept making the sign of the cross. “The witch,” he said, “the mangrove witch!”

“Am I surrounded by fools?” Tita Henrietta cried. “Enrico, will you get dressed at once! My guests are coming any minute. And you, Sergeant Suspecio, make sure the food from downstairs is warm when it arrives.”

Enrico sighed and marched to the bathroom. Talking to his aunt in her present mood would be impossible. She could become high strung like his mother when she was working. The party tonight, he guessed, had to do with her work, too. As he stood under the shower, he tried to clear his mind. What was he supposed to do anyway? As the water fell on his face, his shoulders, his arms, his chest, he felt more and more tired. By the time he finished, he just wanted to curl up in bed rather than go meet Tita Henrietta’s friends.

They had arrived, he could hear them just outside his door. They were all talking about the tree. “This will be the centerpiece of the garden, a growing work of art. It will last a long time,” Tita Henrietta was saying. “Don’t you think your father will be pleased, Lydia?”
