Chapter Three

When Lynn opened her eyes, the room was filled with soft light, cold air, and silence. She lay still for a moment, orienting herself to her surroundings, then pushed off the blankets and sat up. She had to crawl to the end of the bed to get up, so she did it and went to a window. Deep snow drifts were graceful mounds almost up to the windows of the trailer next door. The sun was up, but snow still fell in big, feathery white flakes that drifted down like something from a Hallmark movie.

It was beautiful.

Lynn wished she was a child again and could go outside and play in the snow. She wanted to burrow into the high snowbanks, create a little home, and build snowmen sentries to stand outside the door. But those days were long gone.

Ryan had kept her cell phone and she wasn’t wearing a watch. There was a blank digital clock in the room, so Lynn knew the power hadn’t come back on. There was no telling the time by the amount of light coming in the window. She pulled on the sweatpants and cinched them tight, then went to the bathroom. She watched her face and rinsed her mouth. There was no hot water now. The linoleum of the bathroom floor was cold on her bare feet. She went to the living room and looked out another window at the street ... or where the street was supposed to be. The snow cover was virgin, smooth and pure as a young woman’s wedding dress. The big feathery snowflakes still twirled and fluttered to the ground.

A sudden blast of electronic music went off and for a moment Lynn thought she had set off an alarm, but then the song was silenced and she heard Will in his bedroom say, “Hello?” in a thick, sleepy voice. She listened. “Yeah,” he said. “Okay ... Yeah. I’ll do it. No, it’s no problem. It’s good money and my power is out here. It’s cold. See you soon.” There was a moment of silence, and then he said, “Shit.” Lynn knew he had just remembered that she was in his home. She heard him getting out of bed and she moved away from his bedroom door before he opened it.

Lynn was looking in a cabinet when Will opened his bedroom door behind her. She turned and offered him a smile. His hair was disheveled and standing out around his head and he rubbed at one eye with the fingers of his left hand. His sweatpants were on, but twisted so that the center seam ran from his groin almost to his hip. It was kind of cute, she thought.

“Good morning,” she offered.

“Hi,” he said. “Could you hear me in there?”

“A little,” she admitted.

“I’ve got another run to do,” he said.

Lynn waited, wondering what would come next. When he didn’t say anything, she offered, “I’ll get ready to go,” she said.

Will grinned at her. “Just gonna walk out into three feet of snow in sweatpants and those high heels you were wearing last night?” he asked.
