The shadows thrown in the night-time ward’s half-light were gouging her mother’s etched face into things that weren’t her mother, thought Anna. From one angle Francie looked masculine, from another, almost like a young woman, and from a third she seemed like nothing human at all, a gargoyle, as if she were not only dead, but had not been living for a very long time.

And this last view shocked Anna so much that for a moment she lost track of what Davy was talking about. Why she was so shocked she could not understand: but it was Francie not as a mother, not as someone subservient to her children’s needs, but as something that smelt and made noise and shat and pissed; something, in other words, no different from Anna. She turned to see Davy staring at her, his dark-ringed eyes for once strangely alive and alight.

He was a man in the desert dying of thirst, Davy was saying. He didn’t want to be shown a sign that said ‘Well’. He wanted water. Where is it? Yes, he continued, perhaps that was the question. Perhaps that was the only question. Shouldn’t there be some things that at least ask the question?

Sorry, Anna said, looking down at her phone and turning away.
