The Natural Sleep/Wake Cycles
The cyclic alternation of night and day regulate our natural sleep/wake cycles as well as various essential biochemical processes. The onset of daylight triggers the release of powerful hormones (glucocorticoids), of which the main ones are cortisol and corticosterone. Their secretion has a marked circadian variation. These hormones regulate some of the more important functions in the body, including metabolism, blood sugar level, and immune responses. Peak levels occur between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. and gradually decrease as the day continues. The lowest level occurs between midnight and 3 a.m.
