PLANTING

Lettuce seed can generally be sown from early spring onwards, with a cloche for protection if needed. Germination normally takes 14–21 days. Alternatively, you can start seeds in pots or trays indoors and plant outdoors in spring.

GROWING

Thinning outdoor sown lettuce seedlings can begin as soon as the first true leaves appear, and do this gradually, continuing until the plants are spaced 30cm (12in) apart. Don’t forget the larger seedlings can be picked and eaten. Regular watering is crucial to growing good lettuces. Unless it rains, water well at least once a week and more often during periods of hot weather.
