CHAPTER VIII

The Gathering

They got home safely to their old world cottage where Mum and Dad were waiting expectantly for their children to arrive safely. He said, “I know I had told you before but you had better go and have a bath. One at a time and get ready, it is already approaching dusk. Where does the time fly?

“Jim will soon be here and Mum has done a lovely high tea it will be a feast, remember to thank her. She goes without for you. Now off you all go and get ready, we have put new clean clothes out for you all. So please go and get ready as fast as you can, children.”

The children dutifully did as they were requested. Dad went into the lounge and was soon in deep conversation with an older man who had white snowy hair, wore glasses and had ever such strange eyes. They were cross-eyed. Kit thought very sad what did he do wrong in an earlier life to have such a mishap? Mum went and hung up her children’s coats and fed Bluey and then gave her a huge enticing lovely smelling bone, which Bluey proceeded to gnaw with relish after thanking Mum. It’s also good for dogs’ teeth and their gums.

As it was getting time to leave and all the family were eating their high tea, Mum suddenly said, “Where is Imojen?” and she rushed outside. In the half-light she saw the shadow of the Sorcerer holding firmly in his clutch her daughter Imojen.

The Sorcerer laughed and said, “I have your daughter now and she will become unwell, sick to you, and it will be a long time before if ever, she gets well. You see, for you to understand I will destroy the light in her eyes.”

Kit rushed out and he saw in a moment what was going on. Kit seemed to be suddenly bathed in a strange light. The Sorcerer screamed in pain and he said, “No Kit, you do not win so easily this time,” and screaming the Sorcerer disappeared into the air with his only sister Imojen. At that moment the Deputy Monitor from the Special Companions’ School Jim sauntered jovially up their cottage pathway. He had arrived.

Kit told him briefly what had happened and Jim said, “I am sorry Kit. I know how much you love your sister; you have been through a lot with her. Now the Sorcerer will have her in his clutches and will have destroyed her sanity, made her his instrument and torment her even when she does try and sleep. She is sick but not all is lost there is one source of help. There is my Siamese Friend. She is a cat but she has strange powers and she can get us into the World of Echoes. That is where they are you know.

“That is where the Sorcerer would have taken your sister, to his dark, dank fortress. It is impregnable but not for us. So we, that will be you, me and Bluey can go there and rescue your sister.
