Chapter Twelve

Putting the sedan in park, Ariel looked out the dust covered windshield at the flashing lights and various emergency vehicles that lined Derek Yafo. There were also the usual crowds of onlookers, craning their necks to get a look at something macabre. Shutting down the engine she stepped out and felt the cool evening wind blow across her face. That reminded her that the next thing she should investigate was the total lack of ventilation in the substation. Her basement apartment had more airflow than that building.

Ariel had been at a few cordon sites like this, where emergency services shut down an area to investigate an event, usually as a result of her actions. Those cordon sites had always been a scene of controlled chaos with police and medical services working to keep people calm and ensure there were no further active threats. This was different.

The mood was much more somber. The emergency vehicle lights flashed upon a scene of darkness and silence. Ariel could see where the body lay, near a brick wall that had a clear bloodstain on it. As she approached the police line, she could see the bullet hole in the victim’s head. Then she recognized him.

“Shit,” Ariel hissed under her breath. It was one of the analysts. She had met him in passing once relaying information about one of her assets. His name was Brian, she thought, but couldn’t be sure.

It then occurred to her that perhaps she should have worn something other than her standard jeans and t-shirt. She wasn’t quite filling out the role of the Shin Bet officer.

“Excuse me, miss, you need to step back from the line,” an officer said, breaking Ariel out of her trance.

“Shabak,” she said, giving the officer the more accepted name for Shin Bet.

The officer turned from her and relayed her identification to another officer in plain clothes. The man crossed the sidewalk to her and looked her up and down.

“Shabak?” He asked doubtfully.

“That’s me,” she replied, holding her identification up.

“They must have relaxed the dress code,” he said, not without some humor in his voice and then gave the uniformed officer the sign to let her in. “I’m Inspector Brull.”

“I know, they told me to link up with you,” Ariel said as she slipped beneath the police tape.

“What does Shabak want with a serial killer?”

“Why are you so sure it’s a serial killer?”

Brull turned back to her with a scowl and then held out an open hand toward the body.

“Five in two weeks? It’s too soon to tell, but I’m guessing this one will match up with the others, and was also killed execution style with a single round to the head.”

Ariel walked to where the body lay and then looked to the brick wall. It seemed strange to her that no one had brought up the idea that it was some kind of contract killer. Ariel decided to test the dead analyst’s cover.

“Do you have an ID on him?” Ariel asked.

Inspector Brull opened his notebook and scanned the first page.
