ALEX FELT NUMB.

He noticed the others looking at him, expecting him to say something, but he was numb.

“You ok?” asked Lucy, slipping her hand into his and giving it a squeeze.

“He’s probably lying,” said Katie. “I mean, what are the chances that two ancestors of Sylvester Mountfield appear in Danville at the same time and I don’t see a family resemblance? My guess; he’s a treasure hunter and is using the name, hoping it will open doors, gain him access where using his own name wouldn’t.”

Alex nodded. “That must be it.”

“Either way, we know he is hunting for the treasure, but is he the same Dark Man the ghost warned us about?” asked Chip.

“So many questions,” said Chuck, holding his head. “I feel like I am in an exam, Math or something equally hideous.”

“I know what you mean,” said Alex. “It’s giving me a headache.”

“So let’s break it down,” said Lucy.

“We saved a ghost, that’s a good thing,” said Katie.

“And Alex’s Mom,” added Lucy.

“We know how the library books work now,” said Chip.

“And we have the diary,” said Alex, placing it on the table. “I bet there is something more in there that will help us free the ghosts and find the treasure.”

Katie kept looking over at the Dark Stranger and then back again to Alex.

“He doesn’t look old enough to be an Uncle or anything,” said Katie. “I mean your Mom is what, fifty?”

Alex snorted and coke shot out of his nose all over the table.

Chuck roared with laughter, Lucy giggled as she looked around wide eyes in case Mrs Chou had seen, Chip was laughing just as hard as Chuck, and had tears rolling down his cheeks, and Alex, well, he was laughing and coughing at the same time.

“Why is that funny?” asked Katie.

“Mum would have fit if she thought she looked fifty,” said Alex, laughing. “Wait until I tell her.”

‘He shot coke out his nose,’ said Chuck, holding his tummy as he laughed.

“I’ve got bubbles up my nose,” he complained, which set everyone off again just as they managed to gain control of themselves. Even Katie was laughing now and she snorted, blushed red, covered her nose and snorted again. Of course, this had them rolling around on their seats laughing loudly, holding their tummies.

“Oh stop, stop,” begged Chuck. “I’m going to be sick.”

Mrs Greenwald and Mrs Trait, sitting on the closest table, were chuckling to themselves as they glanced over at the children, and Mrs Chou came rushing over with a cloth to clean up the spillage, her smile broad and wide, delighted the children were having such a good time.

“Now don’t you worry, young man,” said Mrs Chou, cleaning up the Coke from the table, as Alex apologised repeatedly.

The others were hiccupping and the odd giggle escaped as they tried really hard to sit still and behave sensibly, but then Alex burped, really loudly.

“Excuse me,” he said, but secretly enjoyed the reaction as his new friends burst out laughing again. Even Mrs Chou and the two ladies at the other table laughed, and he puffed up.
