FROM Vivien Eliot TO Ottoline Morrell

My dearest Ottoline

Thank you so very much for your two presents, & for not forgetting me this terrible Christmas. Both your presents mean a great deal to me, and I am very pleased indeed to have them.

I have felt frightfully being quite cut off from you all these terrible months, and I do not see why it is necessary.

I should have been thankful for an opportunity to speak to you, or to have a message, even.

I live now in a state of siege. How long it will be I dont know. I had such a terrible shock in the summer, & then since then an increasing nightmare, with more & more attacks, & complete bewilderment. If one had the strength of 2 or 3 strong men one would have been worn down to nearly death by now.

I am pleased to think my strength cannot last much longer.

What appalled [?appals] & amazes & completely bewilders me is that I was expected to agree with & aquiesce in a wicked plot. And still am – ! Bombarded. Threatened.

I had no little presents for anyone this year. I had to stay in bed nearly all of the last 3 months, & can only dress for a few hours, some days . . . and have had to type, and write day after day without ceasing.

Do let me have a word, soon.

My love to you.
