[Faber & Faber Ltd]

Dear Wilson Knight,

Thank you for your letter of the 15th, and for your remarks about my paper.1 From what you say I cannot make out whatever may be the essence of Middleton Murry’s criticism of your work. If I see him, I will raise the point. Now-a-days I only see him once a quarter.2

About the pamphlet, on The Phoenix and the Turtle,3 I should have said about 800 words, but if you think it requires more space, let me know. It is a type of publication which is apt to be overlooked, and therefore, if good, we ought to be generous with space. I agree with you about Fletcher.

I am glad to hear that you have accepted the invitation of the Shakespeare Association.4

Yours sincerely,

[T. S. Eliot]

1 – ‘I was very much interested in your article in the last T.L.S. [‘Cyril Tourneur’, 13 Nov. 1930] I think I am right in supposing it yours – both on grounds of style and subject matter. You will understand that some of the remarks in it – notably those on Cymbeline and the part on Shakespeare’s development – gave me much pleasure, being so closely in harmony with my findings. I am glad to feel you agree, on grounds of pure style, with my idea that the final plays are progressive, not retrograde.’

2 – GWK noted that JMM had written. ‘My work appears to trouble him, and he finds his outlook “fundamentally” different from mine.’

3 – Ranji, Towards the Stars.

4 – GWK was to read a paper to the Shakespeare Association – ‘The Shakespearean Tempest’, tracing the development in the plays of the symbol and image of ‘tempests’ – on 20 Mar. 1931.
