Chapter Ten

They enjoyed a quiet weekend and woke Monday morning with a busy day ahead of them. Alexis had a list of places to call or visit, and Drew had classes. Both faced the day with trepidation. Alexis was concerned what else she might learn about her ancestors, and Drew was worried about her.

She was enjoying her coffee when an idea struck her. Drew could tell by the look on her face that she was up to something. She picked up the phone and dialed. He thought he might be late for class, but he had to hear who she was calling.

“Hello, Randy, this is Alexis Malone. I’m okay, and you? Wonderful. I have a question about a gazebo. Yes, in the backyard of the mansion. When could you start building one in spring? Hmm. Well, big enough to hold eight or ten people hanging around or a dinner party for six or eight. Also, it would be for a wedding, bride, groom, minister and a few bridesmaids and groomsmen.”

Drew was completely confused and enthralled about what she was saying. He moved closer and listened intently.

“Oh, also, do you know a good electrician? Is it too late in the year to add some lighting? The outside of the house is frightful in the dark. Bright light for the garages and shed area, some backyard lighting, the gazebo, of course, and some for the front of the house, and enough outlets so Drew can decorate properly for Christmas. Yes, ten tomorrow morning will be wonderful. Drew will be able to join me. See you then.”

“What was all that about?” he asked as he set his coffee cup in the dishwasher.

“We need lights for the holidays and for safety. The gazebo is for June 12th.”

“What’s June 12th?”

“Our wedding day--you, me, the minister, close family, friends, and the gazebo. I always wanted an outside wedding, and we can have it at home.”

He picked her up and swung her around the kitchen, almost knocking her into the small hutch sitting in the corner. “I love you, and of course we’ll get married on June 12th. I’d marry you tomorrow, but I guess a girl needs to plan a little, hmm?”

“Yes, she does, but no telling anyone until the ring is on my finger,” she said, her eyes sparkling with joy.

“Deal.”

“Aren’t you going to be late for class?”

“Yikes, yeah,” he said as he grabbed his backpack and tried to kiss her cheek, but missed when he headed out the door. “Love you.”

“You, too.” But he had already closed the door. Smiling, she began to get ready for her day. First stop, the county court house hall of records.

* * *

Alexis walked into the courthouse and checked the information board for the hall of records. It was on the first floor, two doors down. She walked in and was pleased to see no one else was waiting to be helped.

“May I help you?” asked the tiny lady with gray hair and large round glasses. She couldn’t be more than five feet tall and a hundred pounds.
