I didn’t want to go, but Marty helped me on my way with a firm push. I stumbled into the middle of a suddenly empty dance floor. I wasn’t alone for long. Several other nine-year-olds joined me, betrayed by their brothers or sisters. We huddled together like frightened rabbits surrounded by wolves.

Mr Watt must have noticed that we were a little afraid, because he switched back to his own voice. ‘No need to be frightened, boys. This is just a little bit of fun. Spooky fun!’

Then the normal lights went out and the purple one in the ceiling came on, but it didn’t brighten the hall. Instead it picked out huge luminous murals that I hadn’t noticed before. The paintings were of bloodthirsty pirates with golden teeth and swords and muskets. They loomed over us, seeming ready to pounce.

The nine-year-olds almost collapsed with fright. The rest of the children cheered wildly.

‘We play this game every year with the newcomers,’ continued Mr Watt. ‘It’s a little something we like to call …’

‘CAPTAIN CROW’S CHOICE!’ howled the other kids, who must have been waiting for this all night.
