There are many ways to motivate people, but as my plant executive’s plan reveals, coaches in business can always rely on three things that almost anyone responds to: Learning, Energy, and Challenges.

Learning

Knowledge + Learning + Confidence = Motivation. This is the magic formula leaders must remember. Knowledge alone does not lead to motivation; learning more and in the right way builds on that knowledge and helps us get better at what we do. When we learn something valuable, we become more confident in ourselves, and as a result, we are more motivated to take action. We then keep working on what we learned and strive to learn more. That’s the number one variable that determines winning or losing: confidence. The more we teach our people as coaches and hold them accountable to that learning, the more confidence they have, the more motivated they are to work, and the more desire they have to keep learning and to start the process over again.

Challenges make you go bigger.
