For mathematically cogent reasons that need not detain us here, Clausius defined a change in entropy of a system as the result of dividing the energy transferred as heat by the (absolute, thermodynamic) temperature at which the transfer took place:

I have slipped in the qualification ‘reversibly’, because it is important, as we shall see, that the transfer of heat be imagined as carried out with only an infinitesimal difference in temperature between the system and its surroundings. In short, it is important not to stir up any turbulent regions of thermal motion.
