“It must be Moriah who sent the video,” Dylan surmised after she’d told him what she saw in the office.
“She had something to do with it or they wouldn’t be questioning her.”
“But I saw her right before lunch.”
Harley bit her lip. “They must not think she’s the murderer then.”
His head bobbed up, his eyes widening. “Would they have arrested her on the spot if they thought she was?”
“Of course,” Harley answered, wondering why this surprised him. “If they felt they had enough evidence.”
“What more evidence do they need? If she’s the one who sent the video, then she must have had something to do with her death, right?”
“Not necessarily.” Moriah never seemed right to Harley. She had believed her that day in the bathroom. Her money was still on Kiara and Jake, although she had no idea how to prove it. She was starting to wonder if this whole investigation was useless. Since she wasn’t working with the police, she didn’t have enough information. And her dad had made it clear that they didn’t want her help.
Maybe it was time to give up. After the fight with her dad, she wasn’t sure this was the best way to get his attention. It might end up making everything worse. Even if she gave up now, it’s not like she wasted her time.
She’d met Dylan.
Made a friend.
Had her first kiss. Well, the first one that mattered. The only one she wanted to remember.
Not too shabby for Harley.
Smiling, she looked at Dylan.
“What?” He asked, eyeing her funny.
She probably appeared deranged, staring at him wearing a goofy grin.
“Do you believe in fate?” she asked him.
“What do you mean?” His eyebrows knit together.
“My mom used to believe that everything happened for a reason,” I said. “She went to a girl’s private school for the first three years of high school. But at the end of her junior year her dad lost his job and she had to go to public school. It should have been the worst thing to happen to her, but it wasn’t because she met my dad. She always thought that it was meant to be. That she was supposed to end up at the high school to meet him.” He was looking at her blankly, and her stomach dropped. She wasn’t doing a very good job of explaining. “What if it was fate that you found Lauren, and then it was fate that I…” found you, is what she wanted to say, but the words trailed off when she caught the look on his face. His eyes were wide, his jaw tense. He balled his fists at his sides like he did when agitated.
Clearly, she’d gone too far.
She’d never been good at sharing her feelings. Why was she even trying now?
“Anyway, I’m sorry I dragged you into this,” she finished, feeling defeated. “I should’ve listened to you from the beginning and let the police handle it. We’re not detectives. This whole thing was stupid.”
“So, that’s it? You’re giving up?” Betrayal splashed over his face.
