The way she said it made the hair raise on my arms. I glanced to see if the waiter had heard her before asking in a hush. “Really? Do you know him?”

“He’s new here. But he acts like he’s the king bee. The other night….” She huffed and shook her head in disapproval.

“What happened?”

“Well, dear, I was walking back to my suite with Bingo, when we saw him with a very inebriated woman. He was leading her to the elevators, and she was leaning on him much too much. I confronted him and asked where he was taking her. The fifth floor he tells me and then frantically pushed the elevator button. I asked him to let me go with them. I worried about the poor woman, you know.”

“Yes, totally.”

“Well, he ignored me for a moment. I asked him again, and he grumped at me that he was busy and to leave him alone. Then he pushed her aboard the elevator and took her away.”

“That’s creepy!”

“You are so right. At any rate, I told Sierra at the front desk and she sent housekeeping right away to check on her. She was fine, but I always trust my gut. Maybe knowing I was watching scared him off from any ill intent.”

“Did he get into trouble?”

She shook her head. “He said he found her wandering and was assisting her back to her room. Maisie let him know that, in the future, all such assisting needed to include a female as well. And that was the end of that.” She tapped her chin. “Come to think of it, trouble did come to the poor woman later.”

“What do you mean?’

“Well, she was the one whose fancy automobile was stolen. Did you hear about that?”

If she only knew. “Yeah, I did. In fact, I was with her when the police came. The woman with red hair?”

“Red hair, that’s her.” Momma nodded.

Huh. I filed that little story away to think about later. I checked the time. “Shoot. I better go get Peanut.”

Momma’s eyebrows rumpled. “Is it Peanut or Bear?”

I laughed. “Long story.”
