Chapter 2

THE FIGURE WOULD HAVE LOOKED quite intimidating, if he hadn’t been so noticeably short. This, combined with his bulky cloak, made him look more like a hunchback than a fearsome representative of the God of the Dead. His nickname and level may not have been visible, but even so, it wasn’t hard to recognize exactly who had just appeared before us.

“Behold the arrival of the Dead!” Our new guest began to thunder.

“Artyom?” I immediately recognized his voice, which he hadn’t tried to alter. “Is that you?”

With a heavy sigh, our guest threw back his hood, and thereby immediately revealed his info bar: “Artamon, the Terrible and Dead, level 128.” The Gnome’s heavily-bearded face had once been healthy and ruddy-cheeked, but it now looked noticeably pale. More than anything, he looked like an actor in a zombie movie, playing a freshly-infected human: big, dark circles under his eyes, bleeding gums — the whole package. That said, he had gained three levels since his resurrection, which was pretty considerable considering how high-level he had already been at the time. Together with his abilities as the Emissary of the God of the Dead (whatever those might be), he had become an even more powerful player… Or actually, maybe “character” is a better description?

“What? “The Terrible and Dead?”“ Mark immediately chortled. “Did you come up with that yourself?”

“It was assigned automatically,” grumbled Artyom. “I would never have picked that nickname for myself.”

Sure, I thought. Because Artamon the Terrible is absolutely the height of creativity.

I couldn’t restrain myself — I wrapped my friend in a big bear hug.

“You’re alive!”

“Well, not “alive,” exactly,” Artamon pointed out. “It’s kind of a weird situation.” He looked around at us all. “But still — thank you all for making it happen. You brought me back from the other side. Quite literally.”

Mark stretched out a hand to greet the Gnome.

“I’m glad to meet you in person! Finally!”

“Same,” replied Artamon. “You must have done an awesome job protecting Andrey in real life, given that he’s still alive.”

Once the greetings and introductions were over, Artamon glanced around; in a perplexed tone of voice, he asked:

“Where’s Darya? I tried to get in touch with her once I finished my trial, but she was offline at the time, and she still hasn’t responded to my message.”

We all exchanged an anxious glance.

“Well... It’s a long story,” I finally broke the ensuing silence. “Zacherial put a tracking mark on me, and...”

While I told Artyom about everything that had happened in the real world, Antibiotic was busy chasing curious players away from the new temple. Like me, he seemed really worried about having such an eye-catching structure in the city, even if it was right at the edge of town. The skull on its spire could be seen from pretty much any part of Kelevre.

“We’ve almost certainly got some spies somewhere in our ranks, and there are always people who are willing to leak information in exchange for a little reward,” grumbled Daddy Rothschild. “We were in kind of a rush.
