CHAPTER 16

INFALLIBLE PLANS

For almost an hour, Cora had been trying to convince Blanche to leave the room. Needless to say that, at this point, she was pulling the fallen leader by the arms, despite being smaller than her and having an injured knee.

‘I am not leaving here!’ Blanche yelled and screamed ceaselessly. ‘I don’t want to die! This world is mad! I’m too young!’ she repeated.

‘Hey! Don’t you get it? We need your help!’ Cora shouted back.

I had been sitting against a wall for a long time, Samuel by my side, trying to think about anyone else’s death but my own. That was my way of avoiding thinking of mine, which, in my opinion, would be slow and painful. Samuel, apparently, was still in a state of shock now that he had really stopped to examine the scientific side of the situation and couldn’t find a convincing justification for it. All of this really shook his logical mind to the core.

‘It’s not possible to know what I’m going to find out there if I go. I will stay here, in safety, until I can find a way to get back home!’ Blanche continued to cling to anything she found in the room while Cora kept pulling and pushing her.

‘This is the part you don’t understand!’ Cora started shouting again. ‘If you do not come with us, you’ll never go back home! BECAUSE YOU WON’T SURVIVE!’ she roared, both out of pain and rage. Cora had never been a very patient person.

‘WE WILL ALL DIE! NOOO!’ Blanche howled, and I covered my ears, trying to transport myself to another, easier point in my life, when Blanche and her cohorts only existed in the world of games. I tried to breathe slowly, letting the air invade my lungs.

Suddenly, Samuel stood up, walked up to Blanche in silence, and stopped right in front of her.

‘Look,’ he sighed. ‘You have no choice. Either you come with us, or we’ll make you come with us. Got it?’

Samuel was as tall as she was, and his tone was intimidating. The girl didn’t answer, but she calmed down and followed Cora towards the door in silence.

‘Take that, Pokémon players! And you thought team leaders were the only courageous people!’ Cora said.

‘Cora! Stop it,’ I said. ‘Of course she’s afraid; she’s in a new, unfamiliar place, totally different from what she’s used to. Furthermore, everything she’s had has been taken away. Let her feel fear if she needs to!’

Cora shrugged her shoulders, as she always did when someone challenged her.

We carefully walked down the corridor and went back to the church’s nave, where masses were held.

‘So?’ I asked. ‘What’s the big plan that will save us all?’

‘Cora and her infallible plans,’ Samuel joked. ‘Which generally fail.’

At this moment, I could imagine the smoke coming out of Cora’s ears.

‘Then why don’t you think of something?!’ Cora yelled as she charged at Samuel, pushing him against a wall with her face very close to his. ‘If you’re so clever! You could start being useful, too!’

I was scared with this new development.
