Chapter Thirty-One

Cameron spotted Dane’s cabin when she came around the bend in the narrow road that wound around Hunt Lake. Disappointed to see the unlit windows and no SUV in the drive, she drove past and pulled to a stop in front of George’s cabin next door.

On the hour drive to the lake, a thousand questions had swarmed in her mind. But maybe George could shed a light on who Dane suspected in the new murders, and why he was being so secretive. According to Dane, his father knew more about the old cases than anyone.

A look of surprise washed over George’s face when he opened the door. ““Cameron. What are you doing here?” He glanced behind her at his son’s neighboring cabin. “Is Dane with you?”

“No. He’s not answering his phone. Nelson was looking for him earlier too. I suppose he could’ve gone out of cell range investigating Sienna’s murder, but I thought maybe he’d come up here.”

“I haven’t seen him.” George opened the door wider. “But come in. You know, for a second, I thought you’d come to finish my dental appointment. And if that were the case, I’d have to send you home.”

George winked as she stepped inside his cabin, which was dimly lit by a kerosene lamp and the flames flickering from his wood stove. The layout of his cabin was very similar to Dane’s, only bigger. George motioned toward his couch facing the window. She took a seat and in the waning daylight, she could make out a bald eagle land on George’s floating dock. She stared at the view as George sank onto the other side of the couch. From what Dane had said, her burning questions could be a sensitive topic for George, but she needed to ask anyway.

“What did Dane come to talk to you about after Madison Youngblood’s murder?”

George lifted his eyebrows. His expression hardened, confirming her suspicion that it was still a sore subject for him.

“I would’ve preferred another dental visit if I’d known you came to talk about that.”

“I’m sorry. Dane—

George waved his hand through the air. “It’s fine. Dane wanted my take on whether it could be related to two unsolved murders from Tok in the nineties. I obsessed over those cases and kept a notebook on the investigations for many years.” He turned to face her. “A detective from Seattle actually just called me asking about those murders.”

Cameron straightened. “Tanner?”

“Mulholland, I think he said. You know him?”

“I do.” Cameron sank against the couch, glad that Tanner was at least looking into those cold cases. But it still didn’t answer her questions about Dane. “What did he ask you?”

“He wanted to know if I thought the new murders could be the same killer from the two in the nineties. I told him I didn’t think so.”

Because it was John. “Why’s that?”

“For one thing, they’d be stupid to come back and kill again in Tok after all these years of not being caught. I told the detective that my guess is the killer moved on to somewhere else.
