CHAPTER FIFTEEN

DANNI

Danni opened her eyes and her head throbbed immediately. It always seemed to throb these days; from lack of sleep, from the incessant sound of shelling that echoed in her ears even when the air around her was silent, and from the conversations that kept playing through her mind whenever she was still. She’d barely slept, too afraid to shut her eyes, scared of the dreams that might haunt her. And when she did sleep, she woke shaking, terrified of the dark, terrified of her own thoughts.

Because when I shut my eyes, Andy comes to me.

She clenched her hands into fists so tightly that her nails dug sharply into the soft center of her palms. The memory was visceral, sending waves of violent emotion through her, emotion that she endured silently for fear that anyone would think she was weak. She told herself constantly that everyone around her had lost someone, that this, this, was why they thought women the weaker gender and didn’t want them on the front lines. But she knew it was a lie—she’d witnessed with her own eyes the torturous, ripping pain and emotion of the men around her. And every time Ella tried to get her to talk about what had happened, it was like the scab being picked off a wound.

Over the past few days, they’d inched farther inland as the field hospital moved to keep up with the changing front lines so they could provide immediate medical support and urgent surgeries to the injured troops. Consequently, it had been a struggle for them to get their work transmitted back to London, but she’d never expected it to be easy, and the fact that she’d managed to report back before the likes of Michael Miller had even made it to shore had pushed her to keep on trying. They’d largely been ignored by anyone of significance, the fighting too intense for anyone to care that two women were quietly taking notes and capturing images of the fighting. But she knew that she was going to cross paths again with Cameron, and she wasn’t looking forward to it. He seemed fixated on putting an end to their campaign, and it appeared he was as pig-headed as she was about being right.

And what no one else knew was that it wasn’t just work to her, it was personal. As soon as the Allies inched farther forward again, she planned on leaving the camp and moving heaven and earth to find Chloe. It was the first time in her life that something was more important to her than her photography; she was going to stop at nothing to find Andy’s sister.

“What I wouldn’t give for a mattress,” Ella moaned next to her.

Danni turned and watched as Ella stretched. They’d been sleeping rough since they arrived, getting rest whenever they could, but the reality was very little shut-eye and very, very bad coffee. And there was only so long they could get away with drinking the coffee at the temporary hospitals.
