FROM First Comes Love

A couple of months after Tony died, I was driving the kids to school and “Modern Love” came on the radio, the old David Bowie song that was so popular the year we met. As has become almost inevitable when I listen to the radio, I started crying—whole decades of popular music do this to me now. Commercials do this to me, cemeteries, beauty salons, getting a massage, not getting a massage, tall, thin men, men with wire-rimmed glasses, billboards for Newport 100s, waking up in the middle of the night, trying to pick a movie to rent, the list goes on.

Vincie, already familiar with the phenomenon, asked, Does this song remind you of Daddy?

Yes, I told him, this was one of our favorite songs.

Don’t you think it’s still one of his favorite songs? asked Vince.

Oh, Vincie, I don’t know, I answered, holding back a sob of frustration. I don’t even know if they have music in heaven.

Well, why don’t we open the windows? he suggested.

Do what?

Open the windows, so Daddy can hear it in heaven.
