STOLEN WORK

Tragically, Alice Ball died when she was only twenty-four years old, soon after making her discovery. She may have died from exposure to chlorine gas during a lab demonstration, but it is unclear. Her death certificate was altered to state that she died of tuberculosis. The university’s president, who was also a chemist, took over Ball’s studies, publishing her results under his own name, and producing large quantities of the medicine she’d created.

AN ALLY

When he realized what had happened, Harry Hollman made it public that credit for Alice Ball’s discovery had been stolen by the president of the university. Hollman published a paper of his own, crediting Alice for her work and dubbing her leprosy treatment the “Ball Method.” Until effective antibiotics were invented in the 1940s, Alice Ball’s treatment was the only effective medicine for Hansen’s disease. Recently the University of Hawaii erected a plaque in her honor, awarded her a medal, and named a scholarship after her. The state of Hawaii now celebrates “Alice Ball Day.”
