This made the king very sad.

When the king was sad, it always raised his spirits to lie on the sweet, green grass and watch the clouds as they floated across the sky, so he looked for a special place to lie down.

But when the king looked for a special place, he found that the grass was not green and sweet. In some places it was brown and dry, and in other places it was damp and black with mold. So the king simply stood where he was and looked up at the sky, hoping to find a beautiful cloud to lift his spirits.

But when the king looked up to the sky, he saw just one tiny, tired cloud. This was all that was left of the beautiful clouds that had entered his kingdom just as the wall was completed. As the king looked up, the last cloud cried a few drops of rain onto the land…then disappeared.

Now the young king was sadder than he had ever been since his father, the old king, had died. And he wondered what had changed.
