1. Following the tradition of the Persians, there are two kinds of Haoma: the white, which could be gathered only on the ‘sacred mountain’, which they called Alborj, and the yellow, which replaced the first when the ancestors of the Iranians had left their original dwelling-place, but which subsequently was also lost. Here we have the successive phases of spiritual obscuration that occur gradually throughout the different ages of the human cycle.

2. Dionysos, or Bacchus, has many names, corresponding to as many different aspects; under at least one of these aspects, tradition has it that he came from India. The account of his having been born from the thigh of Zeus rests on a most curious verbal assimilation: the Greek word meros, ‘thigh’, has been substituted for the name of Meru, the ‘polar mountain’, with which it is phonetically almost identical.

3. The numerical value of each of these two words is 70.

4. Melchizedek’s sacrifice is usually regarded as a ‘prefiguration’ of the Eucharist; and the Christian priesthood is identified with the very priesthood of Melchizedek according to the application to Christ of this verse from the Psalms: Tu es sacerdos in aeternum secundum ordinem Melchissedec 5.Heb.5:11. [‘You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek’] (Ps. 110:4).

5. Heb. 5:11.

6. At that time the name Abram had not yet been changed to Abraham; the name Sarai was changed at the same time to 14:19–20. Sarah (Gen. 17), so that the sum of the numerical values remained the same.

7. Gen. 14:19–20.

8. We should note also that the same root is found again in the words Islam and muslim, ‘submission to the divine Will’ (which is the proper meaning of the word Islam) being the condition necessary for ‘Peace’; the idea expressed here is comparable to that of the Hindu Dharma.

9. Heb. 7:1–3.

10. Ibid., 7:7.

11. Gen. 14:22.

12. The numerical value of each of these names is 197.

13. This is the complete justification of the identity we indicated earlier; it should be noted however that participation in the tradition may not always be conscious; in this case it is nonetheless real as a means of transmission of ‘spiritual influences’, though without implying effective accession to any rank whatsoever of the initiatic hierarchy.

14. On the basis of the preceding remarks it can also be said that this superiority corresponds to that of the New Covenant over the Ancient Law (Heb. 7:22). It would be opportune to explain here why Christ was born into the royal tribe of Judah and not the priestly tribe of Levi (see Heb. 7:11–17), but such considerations would lead us too far afield. The organization of the twelve tribes, descending from the twelve sons of Jacob, is naturally linked to the twelvefold constitution of the spiritual centers.

15. Heb. 7:9.

16. Ibid., 7:8.

17. In the Pistis Sophia of the Alexandrine Gnostics, Melchizedek is given the name ‘Great Receiver of Eternal Light’; this again is in conformity with the function of Manu, who does in fact receive the intelligible Light
