Chapter Twenty-one

George knocked on Isabella’s Incident Room door and let himself in. The detectives were all crowded around the smart whiteboard at the head of the room, with Yolanda operating the computer connected to it.

Wood turned to George and smiled. “You OK?”

He nodded and took a seat at the back.

Isabella frowned but turned back to the whiteboard. “Can everyone see this screen?” she asked.

Nobody complained, so she switched off the lights and then took a seat. Tashan Blackburn, other members of CID, and uniformed officers were all in attendance. Yolanda started the video.

The pub car park next to Holy Trinity Church in Rothwell appeared on the screen, completely deserted. The camera’s vantage was good, meaning they could see everything.

The time stamp showed 3.01 am. DS Wood looked at Yolanda. “What am I looking at?”

Then Wood felt her pulse quicken. A figure dressed in all black, with a hood obscuring its face, appeared at the entrance to the car park, and Isabella watched as they strolled through it, a blade glinting in the streetlights.

“Stop the tape, please,” said Isabella. “Is that a man or a woman?” she asked.

Nobody said anything, so she turned to Yolanda. “Did you find any other footage?”

“No, Sarge.”

“OK, continue the video, please.”

Yolanda obliged, and they watched as the figure left their field of view, and the video stopped.

“Is that it?” Wood asked.

“I’m afraid so, Sarge,” Yolanda said. “It appears our killer entered the church another way, which makes sense considering the lychgate is closed on a night.”

“And now the bloodstains make sense, leading away from the scene,” Wood said. “Whoever it is will have been covered in blood.”

She was greeted with nods from the team.

“I need you lot to go out and scour Ingram Parade and the surrounding streets for CCTV,” Isabella said. “It’s clear from this the killer walked home. They could even have stashed their vehicle nearby so it wouldn’t be seen on the car park camera.” She paused. “Speak with Morrisons, too. They might have CCTV on the outside. And I know there’s a funeral director on that road, so see if they have any cameras, too.”

“That’s a massive area to search, Sarge,” Yolanda said, her concern written all over her face.

“I agree, DS Williams, but we need to find the culprit, and fast. I’ll speak with DCI Alexander and see if he can provide more officers.”

“Thank you,” said Yolanda.

“If anyone finds anything, let me know ASAP, OK?”

The team nodded.

“Good, now crack on.”

George helped Isabella navigate the steps and through the wooden doors into Blackburn Hall in Rothwell.

The night had started to cool, but Izzy felt ridiculously hot and couldn’t wait to tear her clothes from her body and take a cold shower.

Inside, nobody was staffing the booth to the left, so they headed straight through to the antechamber, a wide circle of purple chairs greeting them.

Most were occupied, so George dragged two from the back, and he and Wood sat down on them next to the fire exit.

It wasn’t long before
