Be Careful to Not Transfer Unbelief

Before we move on, let me issue a cogent warning. Spiritual DNA and the traditions of the fathers must be acted upon in faith by subsequent generations. It is not enough to know these things; we must do them. Hall understood this. In Atomic Power with God through Fasting and Prayer, he rightly warns about the great risk of developing a cold, theistic “form of godliness” that ends up justifying powerlessness, explaining away divine encounters out of lack of real, firsthand experience. In this case, the fathers are actually handing a baton of unbelief to the next generation! We must be careful not to lay theological and experiential stumbling stones for the next generation to trip over.

The lack of fasting explains the great “falling away,” the “losing of their first love,” because man cares more for his “desire-nature” than for the fortification of his soul. People have failed to follow the complete pattern of the faith formula of Christ, given in Matthew 17, or Mark 9:29. . . . After the days of the apostles, the church became powerless, and eventually began to say that the days of healing were over; that the miracles were not for them anymore. . . . The men of old that had fasted and prayed, and who had power with God to perform miracles and healing, had either died, or had been martyred. The younger generation discontinued the use of fasting.8

As they say, some things are better caught than taught. This is part of the reason I have given so much time to detailing the principle of spiritual inheritance that transfers from fasting fathers to fasting sons: Fasting and prayer represent an experiential baton that, simply put, is made of more transferable stuff than knowledge alone. Teaching is critical, but experiences with God are hard to codify. You cannot email an impartation to the next generation. The Church can be top-heavy with teachings, many of which merely pacify the blood rather than stirring it with faith.

Wesley Duewel wrote, “We need Spirit-energized action, but the carnal self prefers speeches. It is a time of fasting, but our people prefer feasting.”9

Fasting not only raises a new generation, it launches them from faith to faith.
