The exit opens out into an open area that immediately makes me dizzy.
The ceiling looks like a display from a fun house where mirrors and lights give off the illusion thereâs no end. It makes it hard to figure out how big the building is. Since we came in through the alley, we have no idea if this place takes up the entire block, or just a small portion of the building.
The round room offers different paths to exit through, with stands in front of each option, but most of the archways are dark. I guess, since itâs a free day, they limit what we can and canât see.
âLook.â Buddy points to a kiosk in the middle of the room, and we head over to it. âFinally. A map of this place.â
A bright yellow dot, which says You Are Here, glows on the mostly dark map. The part of the museum weâve already passed through glow with their room names, like Weapons Room and the Forge. From where we stand now, only one of the next sections shows as available. Itâs marked as Stage One, Italy.
âWhy is most of the map besides the Italy exhibit dark?â I ask, knowing none of them can answer my question.
âWho knows.â Coop points to the bottom corner. âEven the legend is grayed out. And whatâs that line at the top that looks like you can go to different tabs? Itâs grayed out, too.â
I lean closer to examine the bar Coop points to. When I tentatively reach out to touch it, it beeps like an error code, and I jump backward, throwing my hands behind my back.
âThis is why I never go to history museums. Could this be an even bigger waste of time? Science museums are so much better.â Buddy walks to the other side of the board. âSame thing over here,â he says, sounding disappointed. âMost of the life science museums have interactive areas and, well, people who are available to ask questions.â
âLook, none of us are happy to be here, but we just have to push forward. Letâs go check out Italy.â These guys are going to be the death of me. Itâs not like any of us want to be here. Weâre all just making the best of Mackâs impulsive behavior. âIf we keep following the lit path, we should get to the end soon. I canât imagine the building it too much bigger than what weâve already seen.â
âI think this place is pretty cool.â Mack bounces forward, toward the lit archway with the stand that reads Italy. âWe would have been bored in a regular, stuffy museum.â
âWe would have been done had we gone to a regular, stuffy museum,â Coop mutters but follows Mack toward Italy.
I ignore both of them and walk up to the entrance.
âThis gothic architecture is amazing. Now, this is what a museum should look like.â The details in the stonework make my fingers itch to investigate, and I understand Mackâs obsession with touching everything. The entrance
