Palm trees stretching to the sky. The perfect sea - the temperature of a warm bath - lapping at the white sanded shores. A heat that most people in cooler climates can but only dream. Exotic wild birds of all colours perched in the jungle calling out to their prospective mates. To people looking in from the footage already secured by the producers - long before the contestants arrived - this truly was paradise in every sense of the word. Isolated from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the worldâs many problems in built up areas - the perfect place to escape. Yet in reality - the contestants hadnât been on the island for even a week yet and already, abandoned, blood had been spilled and the ugliness of human nature had tainted the beautiful setting.
The rest of the group had long since returned to camp. From a distance they were first relieved to see Paul standing with the others but, when they got closer and learned what had happened, there wasnât one person who didnât wish that he hadnât come back. At least, not like this.
There was a tension hanging heavy in the air. There was argument to call Paulâs actions self-defence - with regards to Chris - but at the same time, had it really been necessary? Tempers flare within people from time to time and whilst Chrisâ temper may have been boiling over - would he have really used the branch or was it merely alpha-male posturing? A hope that the threat of violence would be enough to calm an aggressor. Too late to worry about that now though, what with his guts hanging out close to where theyâd dragged his cold body. Just as James had been covered with leaves and foliage, so had Chrisâ body. Although - that hadnât stopped the ants and crabs swarming for an easy meal.
Billy was stoking the fire, lost in deep thought. His belly rumbling in the night air, certainly loud enough for the others to both hear and empathise with. With the exception of Paul, they were all hungry. Too much time had been wasted on looking for Paul when it should have been better off spent looking for food - be it something to hunt and kill or edible vegetation. Now they were in for another long, hungry night but - on the plus side, if there were any to be found in this scenario - at least they had water to drink.
Paul walked over to the fire, camera in hand, and sat opposite Billy, not that Billy looked up to acknowledge him.
âStill recording?â Billy asked.
âBetter to document everything, isnât it?â
âFor whom?â
âWhoever finds usâ¦â
The two men sat in silence. Since Paulâs earlier manic-ness, heâd calmed down and appeared more normal than before although, had you seen him at the start of the adventure, he still didnât seem fully himself.
âWhat is it?â Billy asked eventually.
âItâs just protein. A source of protein. Nothing more and nothing lessâ¦â
Billy didnât need to ask what Paul was talking about.
