Amanda was dressed and just about ready for dinner. All she had to do was put her sandals on. No point just yet, though. She wasn’t due to meet Leigh Ann for another half hour, but then she figured she could go to Leigh Ann’s and sit over there and wait just as well as she could in her own bungalow. At least at Leigh Ann’s, she’d have someone to talk to.

She walked through the bungalow to get her shoes from the bedroom and stepped in a puddle of water.

There was no immediate explanation for that. But she was standing in front of the minibar area. The mini-fridge, to be exact.

That wasn’t a good sign.

She crouched down, opened the fridge and touched a few things. They were cool, not cold. And the little freezer compartment was about the same temp. Not a crystal of ice to be seen.

The appliance appeared to have given up the ghost.

She went to the phone and called the front desk.

“Good evening, Ms. Preston-Briggs. What can I do for you?”

“Good evening. I think my mini-fridge has died. There’s a puddle of water coming out of it and it doesn’t seem to be very cool inside.”

“I’m very sorry about that. If now is convenient, I’ll send maintenance right over.”

“That would be fine. Thank you.” She hung up. So much for going to Leigh Ann’s early. But it was worth waiting on. Cold drinks were everything after a day in the sun. She liked to keep her undereye cream cold, too.

Which it wasn’t, so she took that out and put it back in the bathroom with the rest of her makeup, lotions, creams, and whatnot.

While she was in there, she dried her feet off, then went out and put her sandals on. With that done, she was about to get her phone out to text Leigh Ann an update when her doorbell chimed.

She went to answer it.

A very tanned, thirty-something maintenance man stood on the other side. He looked more like a surfer than a handyman.

Amanda took a moment to appreciate the exceptional specimen of maleness Iris had hired. She certainly had good taste in employees. It almost didn’t matter if he was handy. “Hello, there.”

He touched the brim of his Mother’s ballcap, an old-fashioned gesture that Amanda found sweetly appealing. “Evening, miss. I’m Duke Shaw. I’m the head of maintenance. The front desk said your mini-fridge died.”

Miss. Amanda knew when she was being flattered, but she was also staring and couldn’t quite bring herself to stop. A hint of Georgia or Alabama rounded his words, adding to his charm. “That’s what seems to have happened. And, please, call me Amanda. Duke, is it?”

He grinned, giving her the kind of blinding smile that made her knees feel oddly unstable and what was that all about? “My father was a big fan of John Wayne. Still is.”

Amanda smiled back, getting herself under control. He could just about be her son. “I see. Well, come on in, Duke. Nice to meet you.
