The Encounter with God

FROM THE THEOLOGIANS’ point of view, and in terms of the Catholic encounter with intellectual modernity, the crucial document of Vatican II was its Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum (The Word of God). In it, the Catholic Church fully embraced modern methods of reading ancient texts and resolved a theological question that had vexed world Christianity since the Reformation: Does the God who reveals himself to humanity do so through Scripture alone, or through Scripture and Church Tradition? Is there one source of revelation, or two? That was how the question had typically been posed since Martin Luther insisted on the principle of sola Scriptura (Scripture alone). Vatican II solved that puzzle—and created new openings to ecumenical theological work—by affirming in Dei Verbum that there is but one source of revelation, God, who reveals himself through his covenant with Israel and then decisively through his Son:
