This was the letter of a man who was heartily sick of politics, and who was looking for the exit from an arena he was not really suited for.

That exit was conducted in a relatively private manner. Cowley was too proud and perhaps stubborn to shrive his soul and recant in public his mistakes of judgment and his fellow-traveling past. That would have given aid and comfort to his enemies on the Trotskyite left and the Red-hunting right. Since he had never been a member of the Communist Party, he could not, like Granville Hicks had, resign from it with a showy public letter, nor could he write the kind of confessional essays that ex-Communists such as Richard Wright, Arthur Koestler, Ignazio Silone, and Stephen Spender contributed to Richard Crossman’s volume The God That Failed. The one concrete public action he did take was to write a letter of resignation on July 29, 1940, from the League of American Writers, the organization that he had helped to found and that he’d vigorously supported since 1935.
