painful joy

A single event can impact you in multiple ways including feeling both the high and low of the same emotion.

... “Uncle Vinnie, he is the most handsome baby I have ever seen,”

I said that with a feeling of pride and joy like I had never before experienced. “You know how most babies are kinda ugly. Not this baby boy.”

“That is great Anthony, what are you going to name him?” asked my uncle.

“Arell Salvatore, the bringer of light and savior.”

“That is a great name, Anthony. It is good that you are honoring your father with his middle name.”

Then I told him about my daughter and my wife. At that time, no one knew how dire Beth’s health actually was.

I then called my mother, “Hi Mama the twins were born, and they are OK.”

“Are they on ventilators?” asked my mother.

“Not yet, but I need to talk to the doctor because they want to put them on the ventilators. I am in the lobby of the NICU.”

“What did you name them?” she asked.

“Arell Salvatore and Genevi ...”

“Oh no Anthony, you have to change his name. I don’t like either one of them.”

“No, mom.”

“It is not too late Anthony. At least give him a better middle name.”

I don’t remember the rest of the conversation. I do know, however, that the joy I felt as I spoke to my uncle was the last time I felt joy deeply. Or maybe I should say, it was the last time that I felt intense, pure, innocent joy. For 20 years after that, any joyful event was muted.
