‘Oh dear! Now I’ll have to remain faithful to your father,’ my mother laughed.

Two days later, Jim Briggs’ response to the council’s decision was made perfectly obvious when several teams of workers descended on our farm.

While one group went to work clearing the fallen masonry away from the barn, a second group brought in heavy digging equipment to begin work on excavating the large pond site while a third group made for a distant point in the farm to set up a drilling rig.

Jason was in his element as he excitedly watched all the activity. He yelled and waved endlessly to the truck drivers as they made their way past our cottage.

I wondered if Jim Briggs’ mention of the noise levels might now prove correct and rang my mother to let her know that I might be moving back in with them.

‘I’m so glad he hasn’t decided to let the council bully him. Where is he going to get the water to fill his pond?’

‘It looks like he’s going to drill for it.’

‘Good on him.’

‘But the hole they’re drilling seems to be an awfully long way from the pond.’

‘I’m sure he has his reasons,’ my mother assured me. In her mind whatever the handsome Mr Sutton did had to be correct.
