AS THEY HELPED ALISON dress for her wedding, Kit was unusually silent and Susannah even more of a chatterbox than normal. Alison knew it was only a matter of time before one or the other of them gave up her self-imposed restraint in favor of plain speaking. She was amazed they’d been able to control themselves this long.

As she sat at the dressing table in her bedroom, carefully outlining her mouth with a new shade of lip color, Alison tried to guess which of them would crack first. Susannah’s frown was tiny, but it cut deep lines into her forehead. Kit’s jaw was clenched so tight her teeth must ache.

Alison felt horrible about deceiving them. Their partnership had been built on trust and caring, but now she was breaking faith with her best friends by letting them think she was going into this marriage starry-eyed, swept off her feet, and doomed to early disappointment.

Of course, telling them the truth wouldn’t be all that much better. She could think of only one difference: as soon as Kit and Susannah realized they need no longer tiptoe around Alison’s supposed feelings for her husband-to-be, all restraint would be gone. They’d be every bit as horrified about the deal she and Logan had really made as they were about the supposedly romantic sudden wedding, and they wouldn’t hesitate to say so.

Things were better left as they were. Alison could never explain; only time would convince her friends that she did indeed know what she was doing and that her choice was the right one. In a year or so, when Logan was gone from her life and she had her baby instead—and was obviously happy to have it so—they would begin to understand.

She looked once more at Susannah’s frown and Kit’s clenched jaw, and a rush of thankfulness swept over her. She was fortunate indeed to have these two people. She hated to cause pain to friends who loved her so much they fretted about her happiness and worried that she was being a fool—and bit their tongues to keep from arguing with her.

“It’s going to be fine, you know,” Alison said.

“That does it.” Susannah set a hairbrush down on the dressing table with unnecessary force. “I absolutely cannot stand here any longer and pretend I’m happy about this. For heaven’s sake, Ali, I thought you had good sense!”

“You think it’s awful we’re not going to have a honeymoon?” Alison said.

Susannah shook her head. “You know better than that. I’m not even objecting because he’s moving into your house. I think it’s crazy, but—”

“I own the row house. He’s been renting an apartment. What’s so crazy about using my place and sub-letting his?”

“I said it’s not the house that bothers me. It’s the whole idea of getting married so suddenly. Rita was so surprised when she heard the news she dropped a stack of five hundred letters. It took the two of us half an hour just to pick them up, and then she said.
