Chapter 9

We drove for what seemed to be an eternity. Every shadow I saw looked like the demon. Thank goodness Pops was here.

Putt. Putt. Putt.

Gears grated against each other and smoke rose from the ATV’s engine. It chugged along another minute, then it died.

No. This can’t be happening. We have to get back.

Pops cursed, then turned to me. “That phone working?”

I took it out and checked.

No signal. Of course.

I shook my head.

Pops dismounted the ATV, then handed me the first aid kit. “Flare gun’s in there.” He said picking up his rifle. “I reckon we’re less than a mile from camp. Just past that hill.” He reloaded the weapon. “Maybe we can signal the others for help.”

Less than a mile? What if that thing comes back? What if we don’t make it back in time?

My lip quivered.

Pops placed his hand on my shoulder, “Jason, it’s okay. We’re going to be—”

Pops squinted.

What?

He raised his rifle.

I ducked.

Bang.

Pops said something.

What did he say? My ears rang. He flailed his arms.

What is he trying to say?

A giant paw smacked me across the shoulder.

I flew through the air and crashed into the mud. Pain shot through my shoulder. Damn it. My rib cage burned and my arm throbbed. Might have broken something. Can’t think about that now. Have to get up. I rolled over and scanned the area. The rain made it impossible to see anything. I squinted. The creature stood with its back to me, swatting at the air wildly.

I inched backward.

Where did Pops go? Is he okay? Did the monster hit him? Am I all alone?

No way. Not Pops. Right?

A light flashed beside me.

My phone sat in a puddle of mud next to me. The screen flickered through a cracked lense. I scrambled and grabbed it before it got the monster’s attention. I snatched it and tucked it into my chest, then turned and faced the monster.

The behemoth towered above me.

I dropped the phone.

Get up Jason. You have to run. Damn it. Don’t just stand here. Go!

My body froze.

The creature growled and leaned in and sniffed me. I gagged. Its breath smelled like sour milk. The monster reared back and let out the most horrific roar I’ve ever heard.

Oh God. I’m going to die.

The giant raised its giant paw, ready to strike.

I cowered.

Bang.

Bang.

The monster whaled.

I lowered my arms. The giant stumbled backward.

Pops approached from the side and handed me the first aid kit.

“Run.”

But—

The monster roared.

“Go,” he said, pushing me. “Get help.”

I frowned.

He nodded, then glared at the monster and raised the rifle.

I turned and sprinted toward the camp.

Behind me, gunshots blared and the monster wailed.

I struggled up the hill and a thought filled my mind.

Will I ever see my grandfather again?
