Lenny Kravitz

Rocker Lenny Kravitz has been wowing music fans ever since his 1989 debut Let Love Rule, and has gone on to sell over 35 million albums and won four Grammys.

Born in 1964 in New York, it was clear that Lenny was going to be a music star. The multi-talented musician was already banging pots and pans in the kitchen when he was a child. He would take up drums, before learning guitars. ‘My parents were very supportive of the fact that I loved music early on, and they took me to a lot of shows,’ he said. One of those shows was The Jackson 5 performing at Madison Square Garden, which became one of his favourite bands.

As he grew up, his dream of being a musician never faded, but, frustrated with record labels either telling him that his music wasn’t white or black enough, he decided to record the album on his own. Recruiting musicians that he knew, he worked on Let Love Rule, a heady blend of sixties rock and funk.

Kravitz’s new album, the first for four years, Black and White America, was conceived after witnessing a documentary about racism in the post-Obama United States, and draws on experiences his mother and father, an interracial couple, had during the 1960s. ‘People used to yell obscenities and spit at them – and this was in New York City, not in the South. So it’s about me personally and about the situation with race in this country. Maybe we are beginning to move on, but there’s still a lot of people who want to hold onto their old ideas.’

The album was recorded in Paris, with Kravitz adding: ‘A lot of it seems to be influenced by what I was listening to in junior high and high school. Soul, R&B, Quincy Jones and bands like Earth, Wind and Fire and The Brothers Johnson – these were the types of records that taught me so much about producing and arranging music.’
