Several hours later, the twins were back in the horse-drawn carriage, rattling and bumping into the darkness and the unknown. Lana was nervous, but she did her best to hide it. The forbidding pine trees flashed quickly past, reminding her of their first madcap journey to the castle when the wolves had chased the carriage. The sun had already sunk beneath the rim of the mountains, and the world was fading into grey and black shadow.

Despite her misgivings, Lana hadn’t put up much of a fight against Adam’s suggestion of going with Benedikte. Her brother was determined, and that was that. So she had decided to hide her reservations and play along for his sake — and to make sure they were back at the castle in time for the night’s filming.

There was a lot of preparation involved in staging a ghost watch, and Angela never liked the twins hanging around while the crew were getting everything set up. So she and Uncle Larry had readily agreed that Adam and Lana could amuse themselves until eight o’clock.

That gave them two hours, and Adam had promised that they wouldn’t need more than that to get to the forest and back. Not for the first time, Lana had to place her trust in her brother’s confidence that everything would be all right. Not for the first time, she wondered if they weren’t making a really bad decision.

But the rules were different for Lana and Adam, weren’t they? They were part of a TV crew, investigating the supernatural; they had to take a few risks to uncover the truth. It was what they had done in Ireland, chasing off after a witch with a ghost in tow.

Lana had definitely learned one lesson on that trip, though — that they should never go off on their own without making sure that somebody knew where they were going. Adam wouldn’t agree of course, but what he didn’t know couldn’t hurt him…

The twins gripped the edge of their seats tightly as the speeding carriage rounded another tight hairpin bend. Benedikte glanced back at them often, as if he was afraid they might somehow vanish. He had taken good care of them so far, although Lana wished he didn’t have to drive quite so fast.

Lana caught his eye and Benedikte cracked a broad smile and let out another of his warm, throaty chuckles. ‘Relax. I know these roads like my own brothers and sisters.’

‘Are you from a big family, Benedikte?’ asked Lana as she watched the trees rushing past in the gathering dark.

‘Yes, a very big family,’ replied the coachman. ‘Big family here in the forest. You will meet them soon.’ He cracked the whip again and the horses picked up even more speed.

Adam, who had been quiet for a while, said, ‘We know it’s true that there are caravans in that stable — we’ve seen them ourselves — but the Count could have anything hidden inside them.’

‘That’s true,’ admitted Lana, not really wanting to hear more of Adam’s speculations.
