THIRTEEN

“Annie O’Malley! Hello stranger, how’s my favourite psychotherapist?”

Annie could practically see Tink smiling down the phone. Her white, blonde pixie cut would be styled to look as though she’d just fallen out of bed and her lips would probably be painted a bright pink.

“Hi Tink,” Annie replied, walking briskly back to the carpark to wait for Swift. “Lovely to hear your voice. I miss you guys. How’s Page?”

The sounds of the police station were loud in the background. Their large, open plan office with the chatter of busy workers and the smell of station coffee felt quite appealing in comparison to where Annie was staying.

“Page is doing a Costa run,” Tink replied. “He’s keeping busy.”

Tom Page was the youngest member of their MCU and was always getting the short end of the stick. Annie knew Tink would be looking after him while their boss was away galivanting.

“Can you do me a favour, please?” Annie asked, spying Swift leaning against his car with a take-away coffee of his own. She lifted her free hand in a wave.

“Anything,” Tink replied.

Annie read out the details she’d written down for Madeleine Cardeal, the witch. Every address she’d lived at from the first entry in Ethlake in nineteen thirty-one to the last, in nineteen eighty-nine.

“Anything at all on this woman,” she said, when she’d passed over the information. “Or associates.”

“On it,” Tink said. “And I can’t wait to hear why both you and Swift are running secret stuff by Page and me when you’re supposed to be on holiday.”

Tink ended the call, so Annie pocketed her phone and made her way over to Swift.

The drive back to Ethlake was easy, Annie sipped at the drink Swift had bought her and wondered about what she’d read. What happened to Mim two years ago, and why did the witch leave Ethlake not long after the Harpers went missing, if she was supposed to bring a circular curse every nine years? Where did she go? And where are they both now? To his credit, Swift didn’t prod her for details, he was quiet except for the occasional flurry of lyrics to a song he knew that cropped up on the radio.

They parked up at the cottage, just in time to take a quick stroll back down the lane to the pub. Gerry was waiting for them with a huge grin on his face.

“Well if it isn’t today’s lucky couple,” he said, handing them both a lanyard. “Pop these on so I know you’re part of my group.”

Annie looked around for the rest of the group, or any other tourists hanging around that would mean Gerry needed to distinguish her and Swift from a flock of people. Apart from the family of ducks over on the green, the village was deserted. She slipped her lanyard over her neck anyway, reading the brightly coloured card hanging from the bottom. Gerry’s Ghost Games - scare if you dare. Clocking Swift’s amusement, Annie shook her head discreetly and he straightened his face.

“We’re excited to be here, Gerry,” Annie said, fiddling with the lanyard.
