Some weeks later, we were absolutely certain we’d be in Egypt for the long term. Things were becoming very busy. It was quite clear to me by this time that the greater plan was to capture the Turkish positions in Egypt and then push the Turks out of Egypt and north, up through Palestine. It wasn’t going to be easy — and we found that out very soon. The Turks were already advancing, as it had been expected they would, on the Suez Canal.

There had already been a battle to defend Romani, near the Suez Canal. If the Turks took Romani, they could occupy the left bank of the Canal and use their artillery against our shipping. Thousands of Turks had advanced on Romani and attacked it. On the way, they overran several outposts manned by our Australian troops. The Australians had pulled back from the outpost line, resisting all the way. Some had been cut off, and were killed defending their positions. The Turks kept advancing. Things were looking serious. They had even taken part of the town of Romani — before the tide of battle turned.

Our Light Horse fellows, as they pulled back, seriously delayed the Turkish advance and disrupted their communications. This supplied some valuable time to bring in British reinforcements and artillery, and to get around and attack the Turkish flank. The result — Romani was saved and the Turks were pushed back to El Arish, close to the border with Palestine. They couldn’t threaten the Canal from there.

It was a decisive battle. We cheered our fellows when we heard of it, and I wrote home to tell everyone all about it. We were sorry we hadn’t been there, but our chance would come. We knew we’d be on the move ourselves soon. Where to, we were unsure, but there was going to be plenty for us to do.
