The giant voice of the brass bell sounded through the house waking me from my nightmares about Buffy and the Water Horse.
Sara sat bolt upright. âWhat on earthâs happening?â she demanded.
Grey light was leaking in through the weave of the curtains. I looked at my watch but it must have stopped.
âMust be someone at the door,â I said. âWhoâd be here at this time? Itâs hardly light.â Again the bell clanged.
âTheyâre in a hurry whoever they are,â Sara said.
As we listened we heard Uncle Vincentâs heavy footsteps batter their way downstairs.
âBet heâs mad being woken up at this time,â I said and I jumped out of bed and running across the room I opened the bedroom door. Very faintly I could hear the low murmur of voices. âHeâs talking to someone,â I told Sara, âbut I canât make out what theyâre saying.â
I ran along the passage to a window that looked down on the front drive. Parked in front of the house was Freddieâs Jaguar. I couldnât imagine what Freddie could want. He had been one of the last to leave the dance which meant he had only been away from Deersmalen for an hour or two.
âKay! What are you doing?â Aunt Sadie wrapped in a pink wool dressing-gown was standing behind me.
âGo back to bed at once.â
âThe bell woke me,â I said.
âItâs no one for you or Vin would have told you. Now go back to bed before you get a chill wandering around with your bare feet.â
âItâs Freddie,â I told her. âWhat can he want Uncle Vincent for?â
âFreddie?â Aunt Sadie said in surprise, peering out of the window. âWell itâs his car all right but itâs very queer Freddie coming back. The last thing he said to me was that he would sleep the clock round after the dance. Said he wasnât used to a gay life.â
âWhat can he be doing back so soon?â I asked.
âNo idea,â said Aunt Sadie. âNow do go back to sleep, Kay, while I go and find out whatâs happening down there.â
Reluctantly I returned to bed. Sara had curled up again and was almost asleep.
âItâs Freddie,â I told her but she only grunted. I lay listening but all I heard was Uncle Vincent coming back upstairs. Gradually my eyes closed and I slept.
When I woke again it was broad daylight and there was no sign of Sara. I washed and dressed in a blouse and jeans. Then I scrambled downstairs.
Only Aunt Sadie was in the kitchen.
âGood morning,â I said. âWhereâs everybody?â
âGood morning, Kay. Weâve all had breakfast but we just let you sleep on. It seemed a shame to wake you when you didnât really need to get up for anything. Sit down and Iâll fry you an egg and bacon.â
I sat down at the table and began to fiddle impatiently with my knife and fork. I hadnât had a chance to talk to Jamie and Shona last night but it seemed to me to be desperately important that we made a plan to keep watch on Edgar.
