In a last-minute flash of brilliance, I call Emma, who jumps at the chance to tag along.

“Promise me you won’t call him Bee Man,” I plead.

“Cross my heart,” she promises.

The further we drive, the more we leave the rain behind, and the time seems to fly by. We chat amiably, and I realize that it’s been a while since we’ve spent this much time together. As much as I’m enjoying it now, the thought makes me a little sad. More than ever, it’s clear that our streams of income are coming at a cost.

An hour or so later, we pull up Tom’s beautiful laneway. This time, I’m so entranced watching Emma that I’m not really even looking at the beautiful estate. She seems as mesmerized as I was on my first trip here.

“This is incredible,” she whispers. “Look!” she exclaims, pointing at the deer grazing by the pond, just below where multiple streams converge into a small river.

Tom and Alice emerge from the house as we pull up. I barely manage to introduce Emma to Tom before she squeals, “Bee Man!” and practically jumps into his arms. I smile apologetically, but Tom is clearly delighted, as is Alice, and I feel the warm glow of connections well made.

Alice takes Emma on a tour of their unique house, something I know I’ll never hear the end of. While they’re gone, Tom and I lean on the old Ford, soaking up early summer sunshine while I fill him in on the events of the last six months or so.

Tom, always quick to listen and slow to speak, absorbs it all thoughtfully. Moments later, Alice and Emma emerge from the house, happily chatting. Alice carries a large wicker basket, the handle slung over one arm.

“All aboard,” Tom says. We all squeeze happily onto the bench seat of the Ford. Tom starts up the old engine, and away we go.

A few minutes later, we near the barn. Instead of slowing down, Tom drives past.

“What about the bees?” I ask. “I was—well, we were—hoping to see them.” Hoping to learn another lesson, is what I’m too shy to say aloud.

Tom seems to read my mind.

“Don’t worry, son,” he says. “There’s more than one kind of bee in the world, and they all have lessons to teach us.”

I look over at Emma, who shrugs and grins. From the corner of my eye I catch Tom give Alice a conspiratorial wink.
