Part 2. The Blocked Rage of the Mother

Our inner Mothers are active and relational, in contrast to the Maiden, who is not generatively productive and is largely individualistic in her thinking. The Mother is a creatrix, a giver of new life and a protectress of sacred work. The Mother in all of us craves nurturing connection in many forms, hardly limited to the relationship between her and child, and she herself is fed by seeing her work flourish and her relationships, to others and to community, thrive without depleting her selfhood and personal integrity. Our inner Mother is also a storyteller, a source of authentic voice and strong, hard truths. The Mother becomes wounded through the ego destruction of great betrayal, and, fearing future violations of the heart, she may dilute her own generative work in order to please her family or others in her inner circle.

The betrayal wound keeps the Mother from being truly whole, and she becomes the mirror for the patriarchy’s perception of traditional gender roles. A betrayal wound comes later in life than an abandonment wound, often affecting us during adolescence and young adulthood when we learn that our friends and lovers do not honor us as unconditionally as we might expect. There is a deep understanding within all our psyches that the divine Mother lives inside our hearts, that she has been eclipsed by the shadows of the Father, and that we deserve to be respected. When this expectation is betrayed, we bleed bright red, often subjected to the deepest pain we can remember experiencing, until that in-the-gut blow becomes rage.

The rage of the inner Mother in response to a great betrayal — be it sexual, financial, emotional, or otherwise — can often be transmuted when we examine it on a more collective level; this is, importantly, not to rob the one who was wounded of her right to rage, much less encourage forgiveness of the betrayer. Rather, it is to partially soothe the sting of the wound by reflecting a shared feminine experience. The feminine feels betrayed by the masculine on a level greater than our partnerships, and there is much merit in exploring the extent to which our relationships are microcosms of the grander drama, the great interplay between the divine feminine and sacred masculine, both struggling to be seen and heard in the global collective.

Ask yourself how the wound of the Mother has manifested in your life, Priestess. In what ways has betrayal struck at your heart, and in what ways has it affected your will? Complete this prompt on a piece of paper, read it aloud, and set it to burn: This heart is mine, and I will never again be...
