Chapter 23

Harvey’s answer only frustrated Acacia.

She wanted more; she needed more.

All she wanted was just one question truly answered. In seconds his body stiffened, and she knew that they had returned.

She was worried. They were back early.

They know.

There was a long moment of silence as both of them tried desperately in their minds to explain why the spies were back so soon. Acacia felt certain that they would come straight up to the house and take her away again. Finally, Harvey turned to her, kissed her neck, and breathed into her ear.

“Two,” he whispered.

He had not put a number on their spies before. Acacia had assumed several, a dozen even, but this time there were only two.

That’s gotta be a good thing.

Both Acacia and Harvey exhaled a sigh of relief.

Throughout the day Harvey’s mood eased.

He gave Acacia subtle clues to let her know that not only were there only two this time, those two were somewhat farther away than the rest had been. One way he showed her the extent of their new freedom was with his invitation to take her on a walk outside.

Her ankles were cold because her pants hit just above them, and she was wearing no socks. As soon as they began walking though, she didn’t notice.

When Harvey got his clothes to get dressed he pulled out a garish colored pair pants from the back of his closet. Acacia turned around just in time to laughingly joust, “Oh no, not those. You know I hate that pair!”

“You remember,” he said in an enthusiastic voice, “I was hoping at least this you would forget…”

He held up the garment, shaking them as he spoke. Invisible legs danced inside the pants. Harvey discarded the trousers with little protest and took out a new pair. He continued to change behind her as she looked casually out the window.

As she waited for him to dress she wondered if the spies would be able to see or hear them as well in the woods. This was one of the things they had discussed about intimacy. They needed to show that they were comfortable enough with each other to at least change cloths in the same room even though they weren’t. So they
