Gerber sat sweating in his jeep outside the PX and tried to decide what to do about Kit. He had met her prior to a mission into Cambodia. A former VC who had defected, she had come over to the side of democracy. Her real name was Brouchard Bien Soo Ta Emilie, although everyone he knew called her Kit because she was a Kit Carson scout.

“You going to wait out here?” asked Gerber.

“No, I will come inside with you.”

Gerber shrugged and got out of the jeep, taking his weapon with him. He stopped at the door and waited. Together they entered easily because there was no ID check. The management, meaning the Army-Air Force Exchange Service, assumed that anyone who was on the military base at Nha Trang would have exchange privileges.

It was like a hundred other PXs in a hundred other locations: stereos and cameras and televisions and fans; racks of clothes and racks of books; shelves of food and a thousand other items. Dozens of soldiers were circulating in the aisles, studying the displays. Many of them carried weapons. Twenty or thirty Vietnamese women worked as clerks.

Kit dragged Gerber to an aisle where there was a variety of women’s clothing in small sizes that was obviously there for the men to buy for their Vietnamese girlfriends. A couple of the clerks were pawing through a heap of lacy garments, searching for something new.

“You buy me what you like and I’ll wear it for you,” said Kit.

“I don’t know,” said Gerber.

She dug into a pile of blouses, holding one of them up in front of her. “You like this?”

“It’s fine.”

“You don’t have to buy it,” she said. She set it aside and looked at the dresses and skirts. She chose one, then pulled a second from the hanger. Holding it against her waist, she checked the length and then grinned at Gerber. “It’s pretty short. What do you think?”

Gerber pretended to study the problem. “It looks just fine.”

But his mind was elsewhere. He couldn’t believe it, but it was happening all over again. Many men joined the army to get away from women, but Gerber wasn’t having that kind of luck. He had left Vietnam a year ago, figuring that his problems with women would be over. Now, after twelve months, all the problems were resurfacing. All he needed to make the circus complete was for Karen Morrow to arrive on the scene. At least that was one woman he wouldn’t be running into.

It wasn’t that he didn’t like Kit. She was an extraordinary woman. They had spent some interesting nights together, not the least of which had been in the field in Cambodia as they’d spied on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Gerber didn’t want to respond to her as a lover, because he didn’t want to lead her on. And yet, he found himself responding to her enthusiasm, responding to her because she was a woman, and that was the last thing he wanted to do.

She leaned close, her breath hot and sweet, and whispered.
