âIâM MORE interested in how you know Gino,â Nat continued, shooting me a speculative glance.
Deciding that it would be best to give him an answer rather than let him wonder, I said, âMy niece and his bossâs grandson were both hospitalized at the same time.â
âIâm sorry,â he murmured. âIs she okay?â
I blinked, surprised by his response. Iâd expected him to look for more information about my relationship with Gino, not ask about Katieâs well-being.
I nodded. âShe and her parents were in a car accident.â I neglected to mention Iâd been there, too. âThey were killed, and Katie was in a coma.â
âHow awful,â he murmured sympathetically.
His empathy, combined with reliving the trauma, made my throat clog with tears, making it impossible to speak.
He put a supportive hand on my shoulder. âI didnât mean to upset you.â
Shaking my head, I cleared my throat. âShe made a full recovery. As did Delveccioâs grandson.â
âThatâs great.â He pointed at a door up ahead to our right. âThatâs where we want to go.â
When we reached the door, he peered in the window. âThereâs nobody in there,â he said, reaching for the handle.
I held my breath, hoping he was right. He pushed the door open and ushered me inside. Glancing around, I confirmed what heâd said. There were no living people in there. I shivered, though I wasnât sure if it was because of the cold or because I knew that there had to be bodies behind the metal doors that lined the room.
He glanced down at me. âSqueamish?â
I shrugged. Normally, I wasnât, but this was freaking me out a little.
âNo worries,â he told me. âIâll search.â
While he began to open the doors, I asked, âI really donât understand why you needed me to be here.â
âMaybe I was just testing your commitment,â he murmured.
âMy dance with the special agent didnât confirm my commitment?â I asked testily. I hated that heâd brought me here, putting me in danger of getting caught by the cops, for no reason.
âOr,â he suggested, âmaybe I thought itâd be helpful to have a lookout.â He raised his eyebrows and stared at me pointedly.
Shaking my head, I turned, opened the door again, and stuck my head out, making sure no one was approaching. Unfortunately, a man in a uniform was. I closed the door quickly, whispering, âSomeoneâs coming.â
He groaned, closed the door that heâd been in the process of opening, and beckoned for me to join him.
âThereâs no place to hide,â I complained as I crossed the room.
âMaybe theyâre not coming in here,â he suggested.
We ducked down behind what I had to assume was an examination table. But it didnât provide much cover. God scrambled out of my bra and climbed up onto my shoulder.
Nat Huntingâs eyes grew wide at the sight, but I raised my finger to my lips, indicating he should stay quiet.
âOf all the dead bodies that you could have gotten caught with,â God whispered.
I ignored the lizard and held my breath as we heard footsteps approaching the door. I watched
