“I’M MORE interested in how you know Gino,” Nat continued, shooting me a speculative glance.

Deciding that it would be best to give him an answer rather than let him wonder, I said, “My niece and his boss’s grandson were both hospitalized at the same time.”

“I’m sorry,” he murmured. “Is she okay?”

I blinked, surprised by his response. I’d expected him to look for more information about my relationship with Gino, not ask about Katie’s well-being.

I nodded. “She and her parents were in a car accident.” I neglected to mention I’d been there, too. “They were killed, and Katie was in a coma.”

“How awful,” he murmured sympathetically.

His empathy, combined with reliving the trauma, made my throat clog with tears, making it impossible to speak.

He put a supportive hand on my shoulder. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”

Shaking my head, I cleared my throat. “She made a full recovery. As did Delveccio’s grandson.”

“That’s great.” He pointed at a door up ahead to our right. “That’s where we want to go.”

When we reached the door, he peered in the window. “There’s nobody in there,” he said, reaching for the handle.

I held my breath, hoping he was right. He pushed the door open and ushered me inside. Glancing around, I confirmed what he’d said. There were no living people in there. I shivered, though I wasn’t sure if it was because of the cold or because I knew that there had to be bodies behind the metal doors that lined the room.

He glanced down at me. “Squeamish?”

I shrugged. Normally, I wasn’t, but this was freaking me out a little.

“No worries,” he told me. “I’ll search.”

While he began to open the doors, I asked, “I really don’t understand why you needed me to be here.”

“Maybe I was just testing your commitment,” he murmured.

“My dance with the special agent didn’t confirm my commitment?” I asked testily. I hated that he’d brought me here, putting me in danger of getting caught by the cops, for no reason.

“Or,” he suggested, “maybe I thought it’d be helpful to have a lookout.” He raised his eyebrows and stared at me pointedly.

Shaking my head, I turned, opened the door again, and stuck my head out, making sure no one was approaching. Unfortunately, a man in a uniform was. I closed the door quickly, whispering, “Someone’s coming.”

He groaned, closed the door that he’d been in the process of opening, and beckoned for me to join him.

“There’s no place to hide,” I complained as I crossed the room.

“Maybe they’re not coming in here,” he suggested.

We ducked down behind what I had to assume was an examination table. But it didn’t provide much cover. God scrambled out of my bra and climbed up onto my shoulder.

Nat Hunting’s eyes grew wide at the sight, but I raised my finger to my lips, indicating he should stay quiet.

“Of all the dead bodies that you could have gotten caught with,” God whispered.

I ignored the lizard and held my breath as we heard footsteps approaching the door. I watched
