Afterwards

‘Given my personality, you will understand that when I heard about the reunion, I thought “Shall I go?” It was such a long time ago. But I made myself go. Funnily enough, it was like we were all young again. It has been lovely. I am glad I did go. I suppose when we were out there for four or five weeks we became very close and you don’t lose that. It is really quite unreal. Talking to Keith about what happened to his mum and dad is (was) such a shame. Harry did what he did for women’s football and it was pretty rotten how he was treated. I have memorabilia, like photos our newspaper reporter out there gave us. I have the letter Mum had to write, and one from the Justice of the Peace saying I could go. I got quite homesick at one point and threw stuff out of drawers in the hotel in my anxiety. We were very young. But I remember the extreme kindness, such as the hotel owner inviting us to the christening of his daughter, and going to his house, which was very fancy, and the gardens overlooking a volcano.’
