CHAPTER V

US Legacy in Eritrea

How can we measure the successes and failures of US policies throughout the globe?

The US in Eritrea, A Defining Moment in History:

What took place in Eritrea after WWII was monumental. It was a significant historical event. When Sir. Winston Churchill made a call for help to Franklin D. Roosevelt, it altered the global power arrangement. It downgraded the role of Britain. It was the passing of a baton from the British Empire to the US, a moment that changed the geopolitical leadership of the region from Britain to the US.

It was a moment in history that partly determined the outcome of World War II. The allied forces defeated the Axis of powers in North Africa and the Mediterranean Sea, only after the US established bases in Eritrea.

It was also the end of the colonial era for many European nations that controlled vast territories of Africa for centuries. Like Britain, the roles of these European colonizers were also downgraded. It was the beginning of the era of US supremacy that defined Post-Colonial Africa.

It ushered in the post-WWII and the Cold War-era world. It was a consequential period that led to the beginning of the Cold War competition between the US and the USSR. Eritrea and Ethiopia were indispensable for the US in its competition against the Soviet Union. When the US established a base in Eritrea, the US won a major political and strategic advantage over the Soviet Union. Because one of the main reasons the US established a presence in Eritrea was to monitor Soviet activities.

It was the post-war period that established a new global hierarchy that stayed in effect for six decades. It created a global economic, political, socio-economic, and geopolitical system that the US-led and controlled for nearly six decades. When the US established its presence in Eritrea in 1942, the US was the most dominant force in the world; we can easily argue that the US was the sole Superpower.

The US foreign policy for the Near East and the Horn of Africa was centered in Eritrea and Ethiopia, and it was enacted after WWII. Little has changed since.
