Those Italian women whose husbands were interned and remained at home with their children, barely managed to survive and took whatever work they could find on farms, in small businesses or as seamstresses, among other things. To make things worse, there were numerous instances of internment guards and locals stealing internees’ food and clothing packages donated by the Australian-Italian community and charities like the Red Cross and Salvation Army. Some internees even lost their lives in the camps or while engaging in hard labour under the then established Civil Aliens Corps (“CAC”).

The Australian government has never publicly acknowledged its harsh treatment of these interned Italians and the abuse of their human rights. They were no threat to Australia’s national security. They were racially persecuted.

The closest any government has come to the recognition of this atrocity was in November 2011 when the South Australian parliament unanimously accepted a bi-partisan motion moved by parliamentarian Tony Piccolo, to acknowledge the wrongful internment of Italian civilians living in Australia during the Second World War.
