Like with samba in earlier centuries, the sex and violence associated with funk carioca stirred outrage from Brazilian authorities and media outlets. However, the sound, like samba before it, soon became fashionable among Rio’s middle classes after finding a place in the city’s upscale night-clubs. Funk carioca was also attracting attention in New York clubs, where the electro-funk sound began. In Europe, the funk carioca song “Follow Me, Follow Me,” by Black Alien & Speed became a megahit after it was featured in a Nissan commercial. DJ Marlboro commented on the international popularity of the homegrown Rio sound: “Samba had to go through the same process. Funk [carioca] is finally being perceived as the cultural movement that it is and one of the reasons is that the style is reaching its maturity. We are seeing the boom of a genre now, not just some songs.”34

From the ancient bataque through samba, MPB, tropical rock, and funk carioca, Brazil’s music scene has seen constant change even as the old musical styles have endured. In a nation where music and dance are central to daily life, there is little doubt that the music of Brazil will continue to merge, mutate, and explode onto the airwaves from South America to the United States, Europe, and beyond.
