An accident of fire, the sort of comment God

might drop from a reader with nothing

except a smoke on his or her mind. I thought of the cinder’s fall

still burning as it drifted down and alit

and left the ash-black sign of itself

on the brittle page. I reshelved the anthology.

I left the bookstore and the country, thinking about God but having

bought nothing,

and fell to brooding back in the States about this genre of lit,

and ordered myself online a pristine but oddly unsatisfying copy of

the anthology.
